Jack Bauer 2.0?

Posted in Feminism, Media and Arts, Media and Culture on January 20th, 2009 at 12:50 am

People who know me well (or have read this blog in the past week) might know about my great love of the TV show 24, still other (and probably more) people will know that I’m a feminist, and some other people (again, anyone who’s read this blog probably) might know of my love of analyzing things to death.

So it is that tonight these three loves of mine come together as I post [in what might very well become a weekly feature on this blog] my thoughts on the latest episode of 24 (12pm-1pm, aired January 19th). Obviously, a very large SPOILER ALERT applies to the below discussion.

Memo to the DNC: you didn’t win anything

Posted in Feminism, Politics on August 28th, 2008 at 4:49 pm

I’m really (not) sorry to tell you this, DNC, DailyKos, MyDD, et cetera: but even though you got your boy as the nominee you really didn’t win anything as the PUMA movement is not giving up and not giving in and is actually growing. So I’m (not) glad that we’re “unified” now because you strong-armed the delegates into voting your way, but guess what? The PUMAs didn’t disappear overnight. You’ve seen the power of the PUMAs now (why other reason would there be for moving the roll call vote to inside the hotels on Wednesday afternoon rather than having it on the floor of the convention at Invesco Field this afternoon? Seems to me you were afraid that people would actually, you know, vote for Hillary and that absolutely Could. Not. Happen.), but you seem to be a bit naive in your thinking that the PUMAs will just pack up now and quietly vote for Obama. See, PUMAs are only going to get stronger as Obama/Biden turn out to be an utter failure this fall. Call it unjustified bitterness, call it bitchiness, call it what you will, but the PUMAs have the power to give this election to McCain and they’ve said over and over again that they’re going to use it.

Me? I call it democracy. You f**ked up DNC. Big time. Now it’s time to pay.

As for DailyKos, MyDD, etc.? WTF? When did you stop supporting grassroots efforts? Since when does everything have to be rubberstamped by you to not earn your scorn, contempt, and mockery? Oh wait, I forgot. Grassroots is good only as long as it supports The One. I thought you’d love a group of dedicated, passionate fighters who refuse to give up no matter what. But I guess your blind hatred of real, true, pure feminism clouds your judgment a bit when that group of dedicated, passionate fighters is led by middle-aged women and nary a young white man in sight. That’s f’ing scary to you, isn’t it? You don’t want to think that ‘yer mom’ can use a computer and seriously complicate the life of your young half-white (just enough black to be PC! Yay!) male candidate, do you?

Well it’s time to face that fear, because it seems the PUMA movement isn’t going away anytime soon and you’re going to have to deal with us sooner or later.

Love, peace and democracy to all!

Politics and feminism: Aug 13 edition

Posted in Feminism, Politics on August 14th, 2008 at 5:31 am

Some interesting things from today (Wednesday, August 13…I keep a late schedule, that’s why I’m posting this at 5am):

  1. riverdaughter has some things to say over at The Confluence: “I have never seen a party so committed to ruining itself, its reputation, its very chances of survival, all for the sake of an ambitious, unprepared and unscrupulous man like Barack Obama. To watch this happen is like watching someone in the midst of Darwin Award winning behavior. It is both fascinating and horrifying.Read the rest here. Warning: her post is not for the weak at heart feminism-wise. In my opinion she hits the nail right smack on the head and pulls no punches in doing so. I surely hope that the PUMA (Party Unity My A**) crowd succeeds in convincing Hillary to put her name in the running at the convention later this month, it would be an incredible win for true feminism everywhere.
  2. While we’re on the topic of Hillary’s effect on feminism in America, perhaps I should present the counter opinion…not from a GOP blog, but from the liberal blogosphere’s very own MyDD. Diarist Dale Johnson 007 agrees 100% with the article that riverdaughter was taking such issue with and posits that the best way to break the “glass ceiling” would be for Obama to pick [Kansas Governor] Kathleen Sebelius as VP. All I have to say on the matter is that it’s not really breaking the glass ceiling if the man goes first. All the women gets is broken glass all over her face. That’s progress (and that’s sarcasm).
  3. While we’re on the topic of feminism, commenter EH points me toward this cool looking Geek Feminism wiki in response to my post a couple weeks ago where I wondered if I’d coined the term “Geek Feminism”. Guess I’ll just have to get a little more creative next time I try to coin a phrase! Thanks, EH!

That’s all I’ve got for you at the moment. Enjoy!
